Markforged Introduces First FR Continuous Fiber Reinforced Plastic for 3D Printing
V-0 rating for Onyx FR, opening new applications in aerospace, defense and automotive
Markforged (Cambridge, MA) is a manufacturer of metal and carbon fiber 3D printers and has announced the launch of Onyx FR, a V-0 grade flame retardant material designed for the aerospace, automotive and defense industries. Traditional 3D printed plastics burn if they catch fire, but this new material is self-extinguishing, so it actually stops burning. Onyx FR delivers unmatched strength, superior print quality, and a high-quality surface finish – while also providing fire protection.
Onyx FR is available for Markforged’s Industrial range of printers. Learn more through the company’s data sheet.
Onyx FR joins Markforged’s portfolio of industrial metals and composites, including the cloud-based software platform Eiger, designed to enable users to design and print remotely. The company recently raised $82 million to expand its product line, including investments in composites manufacturing.
“Onyx FR opens up more 3D printing applications in the automotive, aerospace and defense industries as it meets higher fire safety standards,” said Jon Reilly, vice president of products at Markforged. “When these parts are reinforced with continuous carbon fiber strands, they weigh as much as aircraft grade aluminum.”
